Deuteronomy 2:9 "Then the LORD said to me, 'Do not harass Moab, nor provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land as a possession, because I have given Ar to the sons of Lot as a possession. (NASB ©1995)

Ar Ar was situated south of the Arnon; and was called by the Greek writers Areopolis, and thought by them to be so named because the inhabitants worshipped [], or Mars. Jerome says that it was destroyed by an earthquake when he was an infant. Curckhardt supposes that the ruins of a small castle called Mehatet el Hadj, may be the site of this ancient city.
